Republicans Healthcare a Privilege Not a Right
Is healthcare a privilege or a right? This is more of a philosophical question than a constitutional one. The Declaration of Independence states:
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
Most of us underprivileged individuals with little money or hope cling to these words to justify our claim that basic access to a doctor, hospital, or medication is a right endowed to us by God seeing that he created us all as equals. Healthcare is an unalienable right that the majority of Americans demand be made available. They don’t expect it to be free, but they do expect health insurance premiums to be affordable so they can get care for themselves and their family should a medical emergency arise.
But this is just my opinion; republicans disagree. If you can’t pay for it you can’t get it. This isn’t Moscow, as they say no tickie no shirtie. But now the cost of health insurance has become extreme and is eroding our standard of living. An increasing percentage of Americans are being forced to take their chances and go without insurance or are cutting back on medical care to free up money for the other necessities of survival.
I myself am cutting back on prescribed treatment so as not to deny resources to my family. I will suffer the pain and debilitation in favor of my wife and children. Medical co-payments for doctors and medicine as well as policy deductibles take too much of a toll on my income and I am forced to make choices between getting care or maintaining a respectable life style for my kids. I am losing the battle as time goes on.
But that’s my problem, so what? Corporate freedom and profits take precedent over the travails of individuals. An inequality in the value of life has established itself in this country. Money matters, the worth of a person is debatable and dependent on the balance in his checking account.
I don’t think our Creator approves of our forsaking the equality of man premise by which we validate the righteousness of our claim to liberty. We have also forsaken one of our most fundamental beliefs in favor of entities that were endowed by corporate charters and whose life blood is paper currency.
These creations were not endowed with unalienable rights, but again that’s just my opinion; republicans disagree.
