Sarah Palin American Icon Needs Hollywood To promote Her Image

By Mike Hammer (alias the peasant)

Sarah Palin is an enigma to people like me. I have trouble processing her because she presents a nebulous duality between an entity deserving legitimate consideration for the presidency of the world’s greatest democracy, and a passionate commoner champion of the simple folk who cling to their guns and religion.

Sarah has had trouble communicating the essence of how she sees herself: the icon of common sense republican virtues, upholder of traditional American values, god fearing self reliant western pioneer, and champion of the free market economy.   This is what we are supposed to be thinking when we encounter her. This is why she is so certain of her legitimacy as a national political figure worthy of presidential consideration.  Because her fabricated persona is so deeply steeped in all the glorious aspects of American idealism she believes not only that she represents the real America, but also that we will all rally behind her as the standard bearer of our true selves coagulating into a political movement that will take back our nation from pagan Greek scholar elitists.

She needs a new publicist and image maker since most of us missed the point. Ronald Reagan was able to pull this off but he had the experience of years in Hollywood where the maters of image making and illusions surrounded him. He played the part in films and easily translated his film roles onto the political theater where he stood alone in his capacity to draw us in to the world of make believe.

Sarah doesn’t have the apparatus to burn this image into our psyche. We are supposed to just get it. We didn’t so we came up with our own interpretation which is way off script. The heroine became the Cruella De Vil in our version of the film.

Sarah is resentful toward the media for their failure to go along with the story line and for misrepresenting her heroine character as a shallow simpleminded right wing extremist. However, many red state Middle Americans caught on and were able to connect with her.

Well Sarah, I finally get it, but I just can’t get inspired. Go away until the rain stops and the sun comes back out and maybe then I’ll be in the mood for a fairy tale. Right now I’m too pissed off and my mood is too dark and dreary. When you wink and say “you betcha” I cringe and my stomach churns. Now is not the time for you.

Go sell your snake oil in Iowa so I can continue to grope around looking for my lost 401K nest egg and my home equity. I’m try’n to find a job and don’t want to hear about republican common sense solutions. My pain is intense and your smiling face digs the knife deeper into my aorta.

Going Rouge” An American Life. I’ll read your life story if you read mine. It’s called “Wrist Cutting for Dummies” what to do when you wake up from the American dream.
